This workshop is based in Swanage, Andy Farrer’s home town, and provides easy access to some of the UK’s most dramatic and beautiful coastal and rural landscapes. As the weather begins to cool in early Autumn the morning mists are more common and with Corfe Castle a stones’ throw away, we will be on the lookout for some magical morning conditions. As well as the iconic landmarks such as Old Harry Rocks and Durdle Door on the Jurassic Coast there are numerous other photogenic locations for us to explore. Away from the coast, Knowlton Church, the Beech Avenue at Kingston Lacey and many woodlands dotted about will be starting to look autumnal. The RSPB reserve at Arne is very close and has commanding views across Poole Harbour as well as wood and heathland. Swanage Old Pier is conveniently nearby for honing long exposure techniques.
With access to world class locations, the workshop will work through a full range of photographic fieldcraft topics. These will including the use of filters, tripods, long exposure, creative photographic techniques and shooting for Black & White. This workshop has a low student/tutor ratio allowing plenty of one-to-one time. Over the course of the week you will be able to learn and practice photographic, processing and printing skills.
During the workshop we will integrate image processing and printing topics. These will be learned both on location and at the FineArt Ink professional print studio in Swanage.
The way an image is translated from the flat RAW data is a key stage in the process of photography and goes hand in hand with developing your own personal style. The same file can often be sympathetically and classically processed, or approached in a more dramatic and contemporary manner (and anywhere in between). The decision making, personal taste, type of landscape, light on the scenery and a multitude of things have to be considered to strike the perfect balance. Having the technical skill to put this ideas into practice will help you choose what suits you, to start perfecting your individual take on things.
Adrian and Andy will demonstrate many techniques to help you make the most of your images. Everyone will be able to take home a number of high quality prints made using professional inkjet printers.
About your tutors:
Andy Farrer is an accomplished landscape photographer. In between shoots and running workshops he can be found printing images for artists and photographers in his print studio in Dorset. His eye for composition and sympathetic processing earned him the title of Landscape Photographer in 2015. Andy uses both Lightroom and Photoshop and enjoys the process of honing his images as much as he enjoys exploring the landscape with his camera. The final stage of committing the image to print is a satisfying conclusion to a shoot.
Adrian is an Adobe Certified Expert with skills in Lightroom, Photoshop and printing, both Colour and B&W. Adrian has been teaching post processing for over 15 years. He has never-ending patients and prides himself in finding easy ways to describe difficult topics. If you have any processing or printing issues, Adrian will almost certainly be able to help you. Photographically, Adrian has spent the past 3-4 years shooting exclusively in Black & White, rediscovering his love of the Black Art. Adrian’s background and photographic style is a great complement to Andy’s which makes them a great workshop duo.
